Polymer Clay Cutlery Craft
Looking for a great craft idea to get your unit ready for Provincial World Thinking Day 2024? Make your own polymer clay cutlery to bring with you on the day of the event.
Download the instructions
In alignment with our theme of sustainability, we ask that all participants of WTD 2024 bring their own bowls, plates and cutlery to the event to eliminate one-time use plastic dishware. Clay should not be used on the food contact region of the utensil. Cutlery, or any dish using polymer clay should always be hand-washed.
Here is a fun craft you can do with your unit.
Things you'll need
- Two or three colours of your choice of polymer clay
- Metal Spoon, fork and knife
- Rolling pin or pasta roller
- Two oven-safe bowls that will fit inside one another
- Baking sheet
- Optional: clear varnish and brush
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 230°F (110°C)
- Wash your hands and ensure you are working on a very clean and dry surface or mat
- Roll each colour of polymer clay as thin as possible (about 3cm)
- Cut shapes or pieces as desired from one or two colours – this is where you can get as creative as you'd like! Knead colours together for a marbled effect or create stripes or polka dots!
- Place these shapes onto the other colour and roll to combine layers
- Cut the remaining colour into three rectangles roughly the length of your cutlery handle and about 7.5cm wide
- Wrap cutlery handle in clay. Tip – avoid trapping air when smoothing together any seams. Cut off any extra
- Put one oven safe bowl inside the other on the baking sheet
- Place metal end of cutlery between bowl to stand cutlery up
- Bake for 25 minutes
- Let cool completely before handling. If handled when still warm the polymer clay will not have hardened completely
- Varnish, if desired, and let dry
If you complete this activity, please share your pictures using #ONWTD2024. Please always check image release forms (IR.1) before sharing.
Transportation
Units are responsible for their own transportation to and from the event.
Meals
We will be teaching our youth members how to cook a rice and chickpea curry dish and learn about rice and beans as an important (and economical) food staple worldwide. There will be an optional activity to make/bake naan bread as well. All participants will be able to eat what they have cooked. No other meals and snacks will be provided so it is the responsibility of the Guiders to ensure that the members of their unit bring their own nut-free lunch, snacks and drinks if they feel their members may require additional food.
In alignment with our theme of sustainability, we are also asking that all participants bring their own bowls, plates and cutlery to eliminate one-time use plastic dishware.
