Seeking inspired leaders to join Girl Guides of Canada–Guides du Canada Ontario Council.

A better world, by girls.

Now read it again.  A better world…pause…by girls. We recently launched our new vision and that comma is important. That pause strategically focuses on the importance of a girl to our world and our organization. The girl must be at the centre of everything we do.

Girl Guides of Canada–Guides du Canada (GGC) is searching for five (5) new Ontario Council members who can implement this vision and our mission to be a catalyst for girls empowering girls. Through passionate and focused leadership, we can ensure GGC is relevant and sustainable well into the future as a truly girl-driven organization. Every girl in Ontario and Nunavut deserves a safe space where she can discover herself to be everything she wants to be.

This is an exciting time to be part of our organization as we evolve our offerings to ensure we are relevant and essential for girls in Ontario and Nunavut today. Are you willing to implement this ambitious transformational change?

What we need from you

We need Ontario Council members with passion, experience and commitment, from diverse communities.

Passion – We need believers and promoters of our vision, mission and strategic priorities of Relevance, Empowering, Diversity & Inclusion and Agile. Our new direction has been set and it’s “go time” to implement this plan for change.
Experience – We know that delivering on the implementation of the strategic priorities will require added skills and strengths from our new Ontario Council members:

  • Diversity and Inclusivity – you have a passion for and experience in the diversity and inclusion space. Help us make Guiding in Ontario and Nunavut a safe space where every girl feels they belong.
  • Province/territorial-wide change – Ontario and Nunavut are big and change evolution can be hard. Let us learn from your past successes in big change management endeavours and agility.
  • Membership growth – you have experience growing and retaining membership in other not-for-profit organizations. Help us reach our goal of 40,000 members in Ontario and Nunavut.
  • Youth engagement and programming – you are passionate about the girl-driven approach and can engage youth in the development and execution of dynamic program that will WOW every girl.

Commitment – We need you to commit the time to be an active and impactful Ontario Council member for approximately five hours per week for a three-year term from May 2020 to May 2023.  You must attend four two-day Council meetings each year in Toronto. You also must be willing to become a member of GGC. The first meeting is scheduled May 23-24th, 2020, with an orientation on May 22nd, 2020 at 7 p.m. Youth Forum Coordinator, please hold April 24-26th, 2020 to shadow the current Youth Forum Coordinator at the Youth Forum meeting.

We seek to ensure that the decisions and directions from Ontario Council as a whole consider all of the various perspectives necessary as Ontario Council stewards GGC to be the place where every girl is empowered to be everything she wants to be.

You will have the chance to implement the transformation of Canada’s largest and oldest movement for girls and women as it undertakes a most profound change that will, if we get this right, have a significant impact on the lives of girls across Canada.

You will become a catalyst for girls empowering girls to help them meet the most important person in their lives – themselves. With the girls at the centre, this is an opportunity to ensure that GGC is a safe space where every girl in Canada can have the voice and choice to be everything she wants to be.

How to Apply

If you have the passion, experience, commitment and diversity needed to be an impactful member of Ontario Council, please apply by March 8th, 2020.  The current open positions include (click the position title to view the full position description):

  • Deputy Provincial Commissioner: You have excellent people and leadership skills and can positively champion a variety of important initiatives that put girls at the centre (e.g., championing the diversity and inclusion strategy for Ontario and Nunavut or assisting with membership growth initiatives). Currently, this portfolio is responsible for providing oversight of a team of Provincial Advisers to help Ontario Council reach even more girls, including facilitating the Adviser Forum Meeting (one in-person meeting per year in addition to Ontario Council meetings). You have experience recruiting, onboarding, and coaching and can help others see how they fit within the broader organization’s mission.
  • Girl Engagement Coordinator: You understand the importance of the girl voice and are committed to the girl-driven approach. You are able to effectively provide coaching to three Advisers; International, Outdoor Experiences and Program, and have a vision for how Ontario Council can put the girl at the centre of everything we do.
  • Youth Forum Coordinator: You understand and are committed to the girl-driven approach and can use it to effectively facilitate the Youth Forum (approximately monthly teleconferences and two in-person meetings per year, in addition to Ontario Council meetings). You are proactive in finding opportunities for girls to participate in the planning and execution of Ontario Council priorities and are a positive champion for the voice of girls at the Council table.
  • Elected Member (two positions): Although you do not have a specific portfolio, you are committed to taking the lead on specific Ontario Council initiatives (e.g., girl events, projects, trainings or membership). You are open-minded and willing to jump in to support operational initiatives. You have big ideas for how Ontario Council can grow and reach more girls in Ontario and Nunavut.

Review, complete and submit your short online application and upload your cover letter and resume. All applications will be reviewed by our Nominating and Search Committee and selected candidates will be invited to an interview. The Nominating and Search Committee will make recommendations for each position to the full Council and in late April 2020, Council will vote on the candidates put forward by the Committee.
