Camp Chiplaquorgan

Camp Chiplaquorgan

Location

Camp Chiplaquorgan is a Girl Guide Campsite within the Mawiw Area  and is located on the shores of Oromocto Lake. The camp sits on 20 acres of mostly forested land, leased from the Provincial Government.

History: About 160 years ago an English Army officer was stationed here and made his home in the area of the camp. He grew to know and understand the Native People, and later wrote a book, which he called "Chiplaquorgan". The name means "the stick that holds the pot over the fire". Native People of that time always followed the same trail, so it was customary to leave the green stick by the rocks where the fire was made. this green stick was used to cook meat on or hang a kettle over the fire.

Camp Chiplaquorgan: The site was cleared in early 1962 and "Camp Chip", as it has become fondly known, was officially opened in October 1963 by Mrs. Allan Crimmins, Provincial Commissioner. Area Commissioner, Doris Fury, and 400 guests were in attendance.

The Local Association of Mawiw Area is strictly a volunteer group responsible for operating the site.
