The Karen Ritchie Memorial Bursary and First 32 Camp

Col. Ritchie was an inspiring, caring woman who had strong beliefs about empowering Canadian girls and helping them to find their voice. In her honour, a Memorial Bursary was created to assist Guiding women with their post-secondary educational pursuits.  To honour Colonel Karen Ritchie's memory, her classmates at Royal Military College have set up a "First 32" camp fund to help send 32 girls to GGC's upcoming Guiding Mosaic 2010, an event very dear to Karen's heart.  If you would like to donate to either of these funds, please follow the instructions for one time gift option above.

Tribute Giving

A Special Occasion Gift is a unique opportunity to let family members, friends or colleagues know that you are thinking of them on a birthday, anniversary, graduation, retirement or other memorable occasion. We will gladly send a card to the individual(s) being honoured, acknowledging their special occasion and your thoughtfulness.

An In Memoriam Gift is a caring way to express sympathy and to honour someone's memory. We would be happy to send an acknowledgement to the family.

If you are making arrangements for a loved one, we would be happy to provide In Memoriam cards to the funeral home.

Legacy Giving

A legacy or planned gift is a charitable gift made from your estate and a commitment to the future. These deferred gifts can help you make the most of your assets while, at the same time, sustain your passion for Guiding by making a powerful impact on the lives of girls and young women for future generations.

A legacy gift comes in many forms and is primarily pledged as a gift through a will. Examples of legacy gifts include:

  • A bequest is a gift made through your will. Your gift to GGC through your estate planning will make a lasting contribution to the Guiding Movement. A bequest can be a specific amount or a percentage of your estate and it can reduce the tax payable on your final tax return.
  • A gift of stocks may also be made through your will. All stock donations are converted to cash upon receipt by GGC.
  • A gift of life insurance allows you the opportunity to make a significant contribution to Guiding for a fairly small annual payment. You can transfer ownership of a policy to GGC and receive a full tax receipt for the accumulated cash value. You could also designate GGC as the beneficiary of an insurance policy while retaining ownership of the policy, offering your estate tax benefits.

By leaving a legacy gift to GGC, you help ensure that young girls and women benefit from the same sort of experiences that you have had during your lifetime. Your support will also enhance existing programs and help in developing new initiatives that will contribute to the leadership development that GGC is known for. By doing so, you will also become a member of the 1910 Society. The Society was formed in 1998 to recognize those who have made plans to leave a legacy gift to the organization. It was named to honour those courageous and dedicated women who founded Guiding in Canada in 1910. Today the Society has 47 members.

Girl Guides of Canada encourages all donors who are planning a significant gift to seek independent legal and/or financial planning advice.

For additional information on these opportunities and how a legacy gift can address your financial concerns while supporting Girl Guides, please contact us:
