Girls for Safer Communities Project – Project Mentor

Through the Girls for Safer Communities project, GGC will develop community safety audits that can be used by girls of all ages across Canada. Community safety audits are a tool that people can use to assess their neighbourhood with the goal of improving everyone’s safety.

Pathfinders and Rangers will receive training on leadership and on the use of the community safety audits. Girls will go on to work with members of the community to make recommendations and create action plans that will improve safety for everyone.

We are looking for Project Mentors who will be responsible for planning and implementing the project locally. 

Position Description:

The Project Mentor will play a key role in the local rollout of the Girls for Safer Communities project in their province.

Responsibilities:

The project materials will be developed from now to June 2010.  During this development period, mentors will be required to devote two to twelve hours per month to the project.  Key responsibilities and suggested time commitment are outlined below.

February 2010 – June 2010  (approx. two to twelve hours per month)

  1. Identify local services and resources in support of the project.
  2. Promote the project activities in your local communities.
  3. Promote and organize local girl trainings in communities near you.

The project will be launched in September 2010 for project completion in June 2011.  During the implementation period, mentors’ responsibilities include:

  1. Facilitate girl leadership and safety audit trainings in local and/or nearby communities. Collect and compile survey evaluations.
  2. Support and mentor local girls as they facilitate safety audits in their communities and present their recommendations to local decision makers.
  3. Compile and submit a brief report of local project activities in your province.

Logistics:

You will be a part of your provincial Girls for Safer Communities team. Team members will be in various parts of the province. Communication will be primarily via e-mail.

Working relationships:

You will work closely with other provincial mentors to ensure that the project deliverables are met.

Training:

As a Girls for Safer Communities Project Mentor, you will be required to attend a three-day training scheduled for September 2010.  Training expenses will be covered by the national office.  This includes travel, accommodation and meals during the training.

Timeframe for appointment:

This position will commence February 2010 and terminate in June 2011.

National Scholarship Team Leader

Are you an innovative and dynamic decision maker, who enjoys engaging and mobilizing small teams of people to accomplish meaningful work?

As the National Scholarship Team Leader (NSTL) you will lead the Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC) National Scholarship Team in setting the criteria for our annual National scholarship awards and to select worthy applicants from across Canada to be awarded scholarships. As the NSTL you may also be requested to provide assistance to provincial jurisdictions in the administration of provincial scholarship/ bursary programs.

We are looking for an applicant who possesses the following:

  • Belief in Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada’s Mission and Values
  • Strong organizational, facilitation and team leadership skills.
  • Strong communication skills – oral written, email, and teleconference.
  • Enthusiasm for the pursuit of postsecondary education for our Members.
  • Experience in or knowledge of scholarship process.
  • Ability to be objective during the selection process of award applicants.
  • Good networking skills and connections with women in a variety of sectors.
  •  Ability to commit to a 3 year term which includes planning, coordinating, and chairing 3-4 teleconferences per year - teleconferences occur during April and May.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead the evaluation of the applicant selection screening held in May.

Co-op Opportunities


Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada Girl Member Co-op Position

Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada national office will be offering two girl Member Co-op positions to students in the Toronto District School Board. These two girl Member Co-op positions will be located at the Girl GGC national office’s Girl Programs department.

As a GGC Girl Member co-op student, you will have the chance to:

  • Be part of a national GGC engagement initiative
  • Have online conversations with your fellow Pathfinders, Trex or Rangers about what you feel are the program needs of girls
  • Be creative, innovative and dynamic
  • Provide opinions and make decisions
  • Develop your communication and leadership skills
  • Celebrate the positive results

Responsibilities:

Co-op students will be working closely with one or more of the GGC Girl Programs Coordinators in the following areas:

  • Girl Program development and delivery (i.e., reviewing existing challenges and program, assist in selecting international trip participants etc.)
  • Girl Program marketing, outreach and research (i.e., assist in website content development, community outreach, developing evaluations etc.)
  • Girl engagement initiatives (i.e., conferences, webinars, advisory/task groups etc.)

Desired skills and experience:

  • Creative
  • Able to problem solve
  • Able to communicate your ideas
  • Able to work in a team
  • Organized
  • Experience in using email and instant messaging and message boards (for example, Facebook, MSN, ICQ, etc.)
  • Some knowledge or experience in the Girl Guides of Canada programs
  • Interest in program development

Other requirements:

  • Preference will be given to current Member of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada
  • Be enrolled in a Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Cooperative Education Program

Length of the Position:

February 2010 to June 2010
