Tara-Anne joined Brownies because she wanted to spend time with her friends. Since then, she has learned that Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC) is an organization that provides many opportunities for individual growth.
"I definitely think that Girl Guides better prepared me for my studies, work, and life in general. Girl Guides helps you work on interpersonal and intrapersonal
skills, which is important later on in life. If you don't know yourself, what you like and how to get along and work with others, then it is impossible to succeed
in the world."
Only 18 years old, Tara-Anne has known her share of success, much of which she credits to Girl Guides of Canada. "Girl Guides has helped me with many
things in my life, almost too many to count. I recently received the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award for my volunteer work. Girl Guides is one of my main volunteer activities and without GGC, I wouldn't have this amazing scholarship that helps to pay for my university education."
The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award recognizes the benevolence of young Canadians and encourages them to continue their volunteer work while attending
college or university in Canada. Tara-Anne certainly met their criteria through her work at the Canadian Blood Services and a local transition house, while
maintaining high scholastic standards and graduating from high school, earning honours with distinction.
Tara-Anne found special GGC mentors who encouraged her. "Girls are affected by a lot of negative influences and Girl Guides is a great way to stay on the right
path. One of the biggest challenges that today's girls face is being confident with who we are. There are so many images that girls are expected to live up to. Girl Guides teaches you that no matter who you are, you are special and you can offer the world something meaningful. It's a great lifechanging program to get involved with."
The main focus of GGC is to provide experiences that develop confidence and decision-making skills that help guide girls throughout their lives. GGC offers girls and young women many opportunities for travel, educational scholarships, fun, friendships, and adventure along with encouraging community and global awareness.
"GGC helps prepare you for your life and teaches how important getting involved and volunteering really is in a community. I am interested in GGC because
I really enjoy being a Junior Leader and have fun playing and teaching the energetic girls in Sparks. We love sleepovers, camping, mystery nights and
parties."
Tara-Anne is currently studying at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. She plans to pursue a career in education; however, she feels the whole point of an arts degree is to open her mind to other possibilities. Tara-Anne has a history of succeeding by acting on possibilities and she looks forward to being taken by surprise by her future choices.
