1. Responsibilities

What exactly will I be doing as a Girls First Champion?

As a Girls First Champion (GFC), you'll support Unit Guiders within your community, area or provincial council with the transition to the Girls First program. You'll facilitate interactive Girls First sessions that focus on the program structure, requirements, online platform, as well as ways to leverage the program to ensure a Girl-driven experience. These sessions are expected to be 2-3 hours in length, at a location that will be arranged by either yourself or a GGC team member. In addition to facilitating these sessions, you will support these Unit Guiders through regular check-ins in a way that works best for you and the group – telephone, in-person, or web conferencing. There will be a small amount of administration and preparation required for the sessions and check-ins, but rest assured, you'll be supported every step of the way through resources and materials.

What is the difference between a Trainer and a Champion with GGC?

Current GGC Trainers will continue to support adult members through existing training programs, including Safe Guide and Foundation trainings. GFCs are a specific cohort of volunteers who will support adult members (i.e. Unit Guiders) with a focus specifically on the transition from the current GGC program to Girls First. Current Trainers with GGC will be equipped with Girls First resources and information that is specially tailored to their needs to ensure that they, too, are supported during the transition as they are conducting training. These resources will be delivered by the end of the 2017/18 Guiding year.

2. Time Commitment

How long is the term? What happens if I cannot fulfill the term?

The term is 18 months in length (January 2018-June 2019) with the possibility for renewal, depending on the success of the program transition at that time. While you will be supporting the transition to the Girls First program during the 2018/2019 Guiding year, there will be orientation and training sessions to prepare you ahead of the program launch. The expectation is that you will be supported by your councils to deliver some preliminary training sessions in May 2018, to both gain experience and troubleshoot any unexpected issues.

We recognize that unforeseen circumstances may arise which could affect your ability to complete your term. As such, you may resign from the role at any time. We do ask that you thoughtfully consider whether you are able to commit to the duration of the term prior to submitting your application.

What sort of time commitment is required? How flexible is the time commitment?

We have outlined an estimated breakdown of the time expected for the key tasks /duties. However, the schedule is quite flexible as the tasks need only to be completed over the course of the year.  We anticipate a high demand in fall 2018, but the time requirements will also vary based on the needs of each community, area and provincial council. You are free to schedule certain tasks, for example Guider check-ins, based on your own availability. The Girls First Champion event, which will take place over one weekend in April 2018, is the only requirement where the timing cannot be adjusted. More details about this event will be provided as they become available.

3. Travel

How much travel can I expect in this role?

Travel within your community, area, province, or territory will vary based on a number of factors. We will make every effort to ensure that GFCs are representative of the adult member populations within each location so that Unit Guiders get the support they need. While you will be responsible for supporting Unit Guiders who are located within your local area, a situation could arise where you may need to travel outside of this area to support Unit Guiders. We anticipate that you will facilitate approximately five Girls First sessions, but you may choose to adjust this number to suit your schedule and needs of the Unit Guiders.

Will travel expenses be covered?

Yes! You will not incur any out-of-pocket expenses.

4. Experience

Will I need experience as a GGC Trainer?

Experience as a GGC Trainer is not required. Facilitation experience through training, teaching, coaching, and/or mentoring adults, either within or outside of Guiding, is required.

I am currently a Trainer. Can I apply to become a Girls First Champion?

Absolutely! Current GGC Trainers, who meet the requirements, can apply to become a Girls First Champion.

Why do I need experience as a Unit Guider? What if I don't have this experience?

We ask that GFCs have experience as a Unit Guider within the last five years to ensure that their contact with girls is relevant to the needs of girls today. We regret that we are unable to consider applicants who don't have the outlined experience at this time.

I'm a LINK-aged member. Do I still need to have experience as a Unit Guider?

We recognize that LINK-aged members may have regularly assisted with a unit, but may not have been able to volunteer specifically as Unit Guider due to the time commitment required. LINK-aged members, who regularly volunteered in a unit within the last five years, can identify their experience and the frequency/duration of their experience, which will count towards experience as a Unit Guider.

5. Support

What kind of support will be available for Girls First Champions?

GFCs will be supported through a weekend training event (over 2 ½ days – Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) in April 2018. Additionally, they will have access to necessary resources and materials, as well as ongoing training and development sessions, largely through e-learning and webinars, over the course of their term.

These questions will be reviewed and updated as needed. If you have any questions that haven't been addressed here, please reach out to us at girlsfirst@girlguides.ca.
